What is fish oil? Where does it come from?
Fish oil is an oil rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids obtained from oily fish such as sardines, mackerel, and salmon. Its production process involves two essential steps: extracting the oil from the raw material and purifying it.
What is fish oil purified from?
In addition to omega-3 fatty acids, fish contain varying amounts of harmful compounds, such as hydrocarbons, long-chain alcohols, waxes, and esters, which can affect the properties of fish oil. Purification removes all unwanted substances while ensuring that the desired components remain intact. The final product is a source of concentrated long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, providing high doses of EPA and DHA.
What does this mean in triglyceride form?
Fish oil with omega-3s is available in two forms: as triglycerides or as ethyl esters.
Fish oil in triglyceride form is in its natural form and has much greater bioavailability than omega-3 in ethyl ester form. This means that the EPA and DHA in fish oil in triglyceride form can be absorbed in greater amounts and utilized by the body than in fish oil in ethyl ester form.
One study found that omega-3s in triglyceride form are absorbed 71% more efficiently than those in ethyl ester form. Another study found that free fatty acids were absorbed 400% better than ethyl esters.
What does IFOS™ certification mean?
The most well-known quality certification is the IFOS ( International Fish Oil Standards ) label. In essence, IFOS is an analysis protocol issued by an independent organization (Nutrasource Diagnostic Inc.) based at the University of Guelph in Canada, which has the most advanced and expensive technologies needed to test the quality of omega-3s.
Based on the analysis results, IFOS assigns a quality score to omega-3s and publishes the results of the tests carried out in its laboratories in its database (consumer reports). Currently, hundreds of omega-3 supplements are available on the market, but very few have IFOS certification. IFOS certification therefore stands for absolute quality, at the top of its category.
The IFOS™ database lists brands whose omega-3s have been verified by this independent organization, and it is accessible to everyone. If an omega-3 brand is listed in the IFOS website database, we can guarantee that the supplement is pure, uncontaminated, and safe for our health.
